Tips for Writing a Post on Medium

Starting an article or blog post may be intimidating at first. The thing is you’re not alone. Many aspiring writers — along with almost every seasoned veteran — face the same challenges time and again. The upside from such repetitive issues is that patterns emerge on how to craft an engaging, thought-provoking article, one which attracts readers and can help build a dedicated audience. Whatever your topic or style, Medium and other such sites can offer you an outlet for your own form of expression.

Consider some of the following tips when breathing life into your next writing project:

1) Your title is everything

A few milliseconds of scanning is all it takes to either hook your readers or lose them as they scroll down the page. Your title is the first, and perhaps last, interaction they’ll have with your work, so make it count. You want to go beyond general descriptors (i.e. “How to Market Your Book”) while also avoiding titles which overpromise or seem to desperate to capture your attention (i.e. “CLICK HERE FOR FREE AWESOME MARKETING TIPS!!!!!) A quick search through the most popular posts of any content platform will shows examples of articles that tell the subject matter, the unique content specific to that discipline, and maybe even why you should read it. For instance, “Five Ways to Revamp Your Job Search Right Now.”
